The 2007 official coded variety performance trials conducted by American Crystal included 14 RRV sites with 10 yield trial sites. Emergence problems and water damage affected several sites. Aphanomyces was more prevalent in 2007. The 2007 data has been combined with previous years' data, and results are enclosed.

The format of this report has been modified due to the first time approval of RR (Roundup Ready ®) sugar beets for 2008 planting. RR varieties have yield data from ten sites in 2007 and one site in 2006. Data has been combined for trials with light Rhizomania and for trials with moderate to severe Rhizomania. One site (Hillsboro) in 2007 was lost due to crusting and stand problems. Commercial, Aphanomyces and biotech trials were planted to stand at 4.5 inch spacing. Revenue calculations in 2007 were based on a hypothetical $41.97 payment at 17.5% sugar and 1.5% SLM and do not consider hauling costs. Results from the Official Variety Trials sites were good to excellent. Yield losses with susceptible commercial checks ranged from light to moderate in the Official Variety Trials. Fusarium evaluation was conducted at two Minnesota sites. Disease nursery data was expanded to include Aphanomyces ratings from one RRV site (Kindred) plus Shakopee and a Moorhead Rhizoctonia nursery was added along with the established Ft Collins site. Cercospora ratings were expanded to Michigan in addition to the established nursery at Rosemount. More detailed information will be printed later in the Sugarbeet Research and Extension Reports (www.sbreb.org).
