The 2006 official coded variety performance trials conducted by American Crystal included 17 sites. Thanks to the dedicated Technical Services staff involved in official trial plot care, harvest, and analysis. Emergence problems and wind damage affected several sites. Aphanomyces and Cercospora were less common in 2006. The 2006 data has been combined with 2005 and 2004 data, and results are enclosed.
The format of this report has been modified due to the increased incidence of Rhizomania. Data has been combined by Rhizomania severity as well as combining two non-disease sites. Two of the four non-disease sites (Cavalier and Casselton) and two of the nine Rhizomania sites (Climax and Angus) were lost due to stand problems. Commercial trials for all three years were planted to stand (5.1 inch). Rhizomania, Aphanomyces, and semi commercial trials were planted to stand at 4.5 inch. Revenue calculations in 2006 were based on a hypothetical $40.38 payment at 17.5% sugar and 1.5% SLM and do not consider hauling costs. Results from the Rhizomania sites were good to excellent. Yield losses with susceptible commercial checks ranged from light to severe in the Rhizomania trials. Fusarium evaluation was conducted at two Minnesota sites. These results and additional information for individual growing sites are available on the World Wide Web at www.crystalsugar.com. More detailed information will be printed later in the Sugarbeet Research and Extension Reports (www.sbreb.org).
