429 - The 2002 Crop In Review

11-25-02

It was noted last year in the November 7, 2001 issue of Ag Notes that 2001 was a year of great challenges. That puts 2002 in a class by itself with “extreme challenges.” Replanted acres were the highest since nearly 50% of acres were replanted in 1988. Red River Valley yields were a disappointing 17.5 tons per acre with only 16.9% sugar content. Loss to molasses was a very acceptable 1.37% versus 1.36% in 2001. A 2.92 tare percent was very good in spite of wet digging conditions in many piler districts.

What are the probable causes of poor yields in many piler districts?

  • Replanted fields
  • Heavy weed pressure
  • Late planted fields
  • Rhizomania severity
  • Flooding and crop injury
  • Poorly controlled Cercospora in September

Why was sugar percent so disappointing in many piler districts?

  • Replanting
  • Lower plant populations
  • Rhizomania severity
  • Poorly controlled Cercospora in September
  • Late planting
  • Increased nitrogen mineralization causing too much crop available N
  • Flooding and associated crop damage

How serious was Rhizomania in 2003?

It was very serious in parts of the Moorhead and Hillsboro districts and much more severe in the Crookston district than in 2001.

Was rhizomania found in new regions of the American Crystal Sugar Company growing area in 2002?

Yes, it has spread over much of the Crookston and East Grand Forks districts and has been found in about 1,500 acres in Drayton in 2002. Many more fields have also been identified with Rhizomania on the North Dakota side of the Red River.

Rhizomania Variety Decision Tree:

Go to crystalsugar.com and use it to determine need to plant a Rhizomania resistant variety in 2003. Each piler district is rated for incidence and severity of Rhizomania.

Sidney Sugar Crop:

  • Tons/acre 19.1
  • Sugar percent 17.94,
  • Total tons harvested – 863,085

2002 results are lower than 5-10 year averages with tough growing conditions in that area, too.
