416 - Stand Establishment Critical To Profitability

2-26-02

Every growing season presents unique environmental conditions that must be dealt with. History tells us that 2002 is unlikely to be just like any previous year. Getting the crop planted at just the right time with just the right stand establishment take a great deal of planning and flexibility.

Analysis of the American Crystal Sugar Company grower practices system database clearly indicates planting date and plant population are the two factors most highly correlated with yield. Plan now to get the crop planted on a very timely basis.

Shareholder Controlled Stand Establishment Factors:

  • Variety selection for vigor/emergence
  • Seed spacing choice
  • Planter preparation - attend a test stand clinic
  • Planting capacity
  • Planter speed
  • Planter size
  • Number of planters
  • Seedbed preparation
  • Employee training

Each week delay in planting from April 25 to early June reduces revenue per acre. Every effort should be made to plant the crop in the most timely manner possible.
