370 - Variety Selection Criteria

10-18-1999

American Crystal coded variety trials were first started in 1973 to measure yield potential of varieties. Strict criteria for variety approval based on these trials were adopted in 1982. Opponents of strict criteria for variety approval insisted this policy would drastically reduce the number of varieties available to shareholders. Seed companies accepted the challenge to meet these standards and have provided a continuing array of better varieties ever since.

Three year data means from the coded variety trials is a shareholder’s single best source of unbiased information on which to base variety selection. The 1999 trial results will be available in mid to late November. This information will be on the American Crystal’s Sugar Company web site at crystalsugar.com and the Sugarbeet Research and Education Board web site at http://www.sbreb.org at the same time. Keep in mind minor differences between the top 5 to 8 varieties or more are probably not significantly different statistically.

Contact your new American Crystal Sugar company sales staff regarding questions about information in the coded variety trials. Their phone numbers and other information about these shareholders accompanies this Ag Notes.

Variety Selection Criteria Coded Trial Data

  • Revenue per acre and per ton
  • Disease resistance
  • Cercospora leafspot
  • Aphanomyces root rot
  • Rhizoctonia root rot
  • Vigor and field emergence
  • Your Farm Considerations
  • Variety vigor versus soil type and seedbed preparation
  • Pellets versus other coatings
  • Available nitrogen versus variety sugar per ton
  • Planter type vs. seed size, spacing, and coating
  • Stand establishment success versus variety vigor and seedling emergence percentage
  • Grower Practices System Variety Performance Data
  • Ask your agriculturist for the following variety performance in:
  • Your township
  • Your piler district
  • Your factory district
  • The Red River Valley

Numerous discussions of best varieties to grow on different soil associations take place each fall. Is one variety better suited on heavy soil and another on light soil? Table 1, which is attached, summarizes the grower practices system information for variety performance on the most common Red River Valley soil associations. Heavy textured soils are the Fargo, Fargo-Hegne and Northcote soils. Medium textured soils are the Bearden, Bearden-Colvin, and Overly – Boetia – Bearden. Light textured soils are the Glyndon, Wheatville and Hamerly-Vallers. Beta 2084 for example performed well on all three types of soil for recoverable sugar per acre. Its recoverable sugar per ton was high on the Fargo or Fargo-Hegne soils, but quite low on the Northcote clay, all heavy textured soils. VDH 66156 gave similar recoverable sugar per acre across all three-soil types. Cautiously evaluate varieties based on soil type. Shareholder experience on your farm, coupled with coded variety trial three year means are a solid basis for variety selection.

Early Harvest Completion Provides Opportunity

The rapid completion of harvest opens a window of opportunity for shareholders to use satellite imagery of the 1999 crop to plan nitrogen management for the next 3 or 4 years. Contact your agriculturist to get your satellite images, save fertilizer inputs on the 2000 crop after beets and increase ON FARM PROFITwhen beets are again planted on 1999 beet fields. Table 2 from the Grower Practice System information shows the benefit of more precise soil sampling and nitrogen fertilizer application. Using variable rate fertilizer application technology (VRT) based on grid, topographic, or zone soil sampling increased recoverable sugar per acre in 1998 by 573, 398, and 1836 lbs. respectively. A limited number of zone sampled fields are included in this summary. Increases of up to 1836-lbs. recoverable sugar per acre are exceptional and should not be expected every year based on zone sampling and variable rate fertilization.

Idea Contest

A quick reminder that the grower idea contest entry deadline is December 1, 1999. Contact your agriculturist for entry forms and assistance. Take those pictures now to document your entry.
