Manufacturing Certificate Classes Begin at M-State Moorhead

Lisa Borgen, Vice President – Administration

A unique partnership has been forged between Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Moorhead (M-State) and American Crystal Sugar Company.  The partners joined forces to create a curriculum that offers our employees the opportunity to earn college credits while enhancing their knowledge and skills for working in the manufacturing industry.

Employees from the Moorhead and Hillsboro packaging areas were offered the opportunity to attend this specialized training program.  After applying for the program and passing the testing requirements, 15 employee applicants were chosen to be enrolled at M-State and begin earning college credits.  After successful completion of the program, each student will receive a Manufacturing Certificate as well as 18 college credits that are transferable and can be used toward an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.

This new program adds value for the employee, the company and the college.  Employees are given the opportunity to experience college courses, earn college credits and enhance their job skills, position and pay.  American Crystal is enriched by having employees with more education and improved knowledge in manufacturing, who are committed to stay with us for at least a year after completion.  M-State benefits by having new students who are introduced to college courses and who may become interested in continuing their education.  Additionally, other technical colleges in the area are learning that working with employers gives them an opportunity to create new areas of study which can be offered to other manufacturing companies.  We hope to begin a similar program in the northern valley in the near future.

We are proud of our employee students and the commitment they are making to improve their knowledge and skills with the goal to continue their careers with American Crystal Sugar Company.  Good luck to the students in their new educational experience!
