Area schools receive $25,000 for STEM learning
American Crystal Sugar Company has awarded $5,000 grants to five Red River Valley schools to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. Grant recipients were selected through an application process that required schools to explain the educational rationale for projects and detail how projects would promote creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration among students. Eligible schools included all secondary schools throughout the Red River Valley region, where American Crystal’s 4,000-plus employees and stakeholders live and work.
Recipients of the grants included: Minto (N.D.) Public School, Hillsboro (N.D.) High School, Central Valley (N.D.) Public School, Moorhead (Minn.) High School and Red River Area Learning Center in Moorhead.
Minto will use its grant to purchase and assemble a drone to measure river elevations and monitor changes along the banks of the Forest River; Hillsboro will use the STEM grant to purchase a drone for use in its Vocational Agriculture department classroom; Central Valley will use the STEM grant to build, program, and control a VEX Robot; Moorhead will use the STEM grant to purchase a Vernier/LabQuest2 analysis system for their science department; and Red River Area Learning Center will use the grant to fund an extensive list of items and curriculum aimed at restoring native habitat around the school building.
Representatives from American Crystal visited the school to present the school with a check for the grant.
