AMERICAN CRYSTAL AWARDS 2016 $10,000 SCHOLARSHIP TO NORMAN COUNTY WEST SENIOR
Norman County West senior Kristin Harrington got a very big surprise Thursday, May 26 during her graduation rehearsal - one that she and her family are sure to remember for a long time.
It started when Lisa Borgen, American Crystal’s VP of Administration walked onto the podium in the high school’s auditorium. Borgen talked about how all 47 of American Crystal’s $1,000 scholarship winners in the Red River Valley are entered into a blind drawing for a chance to win a $10,000 memorial scholarship named after Al Bloomquist. She also mentioned how Bloomquist was instrumental in transforming American Crystal from a privately held sugar company into the nation’s first grower-owned beet sugar cooperative. Next, Borgen announced that Harrington had won the drawing. The entire senior class and the band erupted with applause as Harrington accepted her scholarship certificate and ceremonial check.
Harrington is the daughter of Becky and Tod Harrington who live near Grandin, ND. Next fall she intends to major in Apparel Studies with minors in Business and Ag Communications at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND.
American Crystal’s scholarship program began in 2008 as one of several community-focused initiatives. Since that time the company has awarded approximately $260,000 in scholarships to over 430 deserving students and intends to continue the program into the future. This is the fourth year of the $10,000 Bloomquist Memorial Scholarship which began in 2013 in conjunction with American Crystal’s 40th year as a cooperative.
Next year’s graduating seniors can apply for the 2017 American Crystal Scholarship through their high school counselor’s office.
