Vice President Says Bush Administration Sensitive To Sugar Issues
October 25, 2004
The Associated Press

A northwest Minnesota sugar-beet farmer says he got the answer he wanted from Vice President Dick Cheney.

Bryan Boll (bohl) of Crookston was one of six people who asked questions of Cheney during a town hall meeting in Moorhead this morning.

Boll asked Cheney about the administration's stance on trade agreements.

Cheney told Boll that he believes sugar should be negotiated in the World Trade Organization. The vice president says trade negotiations are crucial for exports from the United States -- but says "we're very sensitive on the sugar issue."

Boll says sugar is a "make-or-break issue" among farmers in the rural Seventh District. That district could make the difference in a presidential race that's too close to call in Minnesota.

Seventh District U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson sent out a release before today's meeting, warning people that the Bush administration is misleading sugar farmers.
